About this Report
This report explores the underlying trends behind the growth of the machine learning (ML) developer population worldwide (including developers involved in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data science projects). We start by exploring the global population of ML developers over the past year and a half and breaking down the population by geographical location. Then, we look at the total ML developer population, broken down by professional status and categories of applications built. Finally, we investigate the size of the global market for specific programming languages, ML frameworks/libraries, and architectures used to train and deploy solutions.

Methodology
To estimate the number of developers, we use an independent, bottom-up methodology. The data we use to arrive at the estimates in this report comes from:
1. Reliably measured numbers of developers or direct indicators of their activity: GitHub accounts and repositories, Stack Overflow accounts, and employment statistics from the USA and the European Union.
2. Our proprietary developer survey data, i.e., measured developer behaviour. For this report, we used data from 20,000+ ML developers across four consecutive surveys.
