How AR/VR practitioners monetise their projects

Augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR) have long promised to revolutionise how we engage with digital and physical products by providing an immersive way for consumers and workers to interact at different levels of virtualisation. However, the commercial success of these technologies depends to a large extent on the types of experiences being built. In this report, we discuss which monetisation models are used by professional AR and VR developers for their projects, examining their behaviour and choices through several lenses. We begin with an overview of professional AR and VR practitioners, looking at the rate of professional involvement in the sectors and in which regions professionals live. We also look at how they’re involved in the sectors, what they’re building, which SDKs and engines they use, and what revenue models they’re using. Then, we take a deeper dive into the revenue models of AR and VR professionals, while chapter four examines the technologies used and challenges faced by AR and VR professionals using the main revenue models we identify.
